Cake for Breakfast

By Kay Wyma

The leftover cake on the counter called my name. Not audibly, but enticingly. I went to bed last night with tasty lingerings of my daughter's delicious creation on my lips. Dare I start the day the same way?

Not much was left over, but there it stood reminding me of its 6-layers of goodness, motioning me toward a small slice of yumminess to go with my coffee on a cozy rainy day - an oddity in the hot Texas summer.

So - I ate.

And enjoyed.

The slice of cake reminded me to live Today's day! When I choose to live Today, I am still respecting Yesterday's happenings, even sorrows, but not letting them rule. I'm glancing at Tomorrow's worries, expectations, as well as anticipation, but not letting them overshadow Today's now.

Countless things can overwhelm and steal our attention from all the goodness at hand each day. But why give pressures and stress tethered to Yesterday or Tomorrow reign over our thoughts Today?

Why not anchor ourselves in truth and live Today's day fully rather than distracted?

Yesterday's happenings (the good, the bad & the sad) are real, as is the joy available to us Today.

As I ate cake on that morning, the rain mirrored my emotions. I am grieving a friend, a mom of four young girls and soul-mate to her husband, who died unexpectedly. Sorrow barreled in like a freight train fueled by hows and whys. But truth tells us that the tracks are safe and the destination known because the One who calls us both here and home is faithful and true and solid. And hope drives the train, ever pointing to heaven's no more death, no more mourning, no more crying, no more pain that can help inform and ease the pain of all those things that still plague Today.

Happenings describe, but don't define. Each of us can look at Yesterdays paved with good and bad happenings. Though they might label, they don't define. Team or no team, single or married or divorced, employed or unemployed, skinny or fat ... Yesterday's happenings don't change our status as a daughter of the King.

With Fall upon us, transitions at hand, holidays on the horizon - worry, anxiety and expectations about Tomorrow find fertile ground in which to sprout and grow.

"Do you know why we can't see tomorrow?" our youngest recently asked then answered himself after a thoughtful minute reflecting upon his own question. "Because we can only live today."

Truth.

Why not be overwhelmed by the good news that God is with us Today and enjoy the day - respecting - but not embracing Tomorrow's worries and Yesterday's happenings. They don't get to spoil Today's cake. I'm savoring the flavor and the sweetness, will you?
